Narooma and Montague island

For those of you who have been lucky enough to dive in Narooma you know that it is one of the best dives in NSW. For those of you who haven't here is your chance!! One of my favourite dives is back and it’s time to prepare for an epic DOUTS trip!

Narooma is famous for its: 

• Australian and New Zealand Fur seals
• Grey nurse sharks
• Humpback whales

Narooma is situated on the coast and is 5 hours south of Sydney. Nestled on the pristine waterway of Wagonga Inlet, it is surrounded by National Parks, State Forests and beautiful beaches.

Montague Island is situated about 9km offshore from the town of Narooma on the overlap of oceanic zones resulting in a multitude of tropical, sub-tropical and cold water species.

In May we will be able to see the usual Seals, Wobbegongs, Seals, Turtles, Seals, Port Jackson, Seals, Grey Nurse sharks.  While their numbers aren't at the largest, we should get to see some seal pups and dive in beautiful warm water! Various dive sites also have hard and soft corals, sea tulips and exquisite fans.

There are two seal colonies at Montague Island. In May we can expect a colony of at least 100 seals, lounging around the rocks and frolicking in the water. It is a non-breeding colony and the pups we see there are not newborns, so there is No dangerous shark problem. These cheeky, inquisitive animals with their big brown eyes are usually not at all shy with small dive groups and will come right over to the divers. They are amazing to watch as they play together - spinning , twirling, diving - one instant there, the next they are gone.

Depending on numbers we are aiming on doing the trip for no more than $600 which includes:

- 4 Nights Accommodation, inc 1x DOUTS Dinner

-two days of Diving days = 4 dives total (potential for an extra day pending availability)

- Tank fills for the trip.

This price may go down, we will see once we firm up numbers and the plan.

Gear (BCD, Regs & computer, weights) isn't included so that will be usual club prices. This can be organised closer to the event.

If you need any other gear (Wetsuits, fins, mask and snorkel) you will have to either hire it from the dive operator or buy it in Sydney before we leave.

The itinerary is:

1. Thursday 15: Drive down the coast to Narooma. If you can get the day off work/uni it's advisable.
2. Friday 16: Late commers drive down, potential for a morning dive or a relaxing day exploring Narooma on land.
3. Saturday 17: We are booked for a 7:30am dive on Montague island.

4. Sunday 18 : We are booking in for another 7:30am dive, then a nice relaxing drive back to Sydney.

Getting there: The club ute will be drive down on the Thursday if you'd like a lift, it has three spare seats. Otherwise once we know who is coming we can organise carpooling. Please let the organisers know if you need a lift and we will arrange something for you.


The maximum number of divers we can take on this trip is 8. Secure your spot now by registering online with a $100 deposit at the time of registration.

The remaining balance will be payable at the end of trip.
